This July Fourth is expected to be the hottest ever for millions of Americans as more than half of the U.S. will be trapped under a heat dome through the holiday weekend.

The National Weather Service (NWS) said the New York city area saw several decades-old records for July 2 break, notably at LaGuardia airport and New Jersey's Newark, which both hit 104F (40C).
